Maintenance

Building new commercial glasshouse structures is one thing, but if you don’t keep up with the maintenance of your glasshouse your efficiency is bound to dwindle.

When we build new commercial greenhouses, they’re designed to last. However, as with anything new no matter how good the quality, their longevity is dependent on keeping up with the maintenance of every part of your greenhouse.

Glasshouse maintenance isn’t just about making sure your glass and concrete floors get cleaned occasionally, it’s also about ensuring everything you have in place to control your greenhouse climate continues to work as it should.

There are several factors to consider when it comes to the maintenance of any type of greenhouse:

  • The condition and cleanliness of the glass in your glasshouse
  • The condition and cleanliness of your greenhouse gutters and drainage system
  • The condition of your glasshouse structure, fixings, and bracings
  • The working order of your greenhouse heating, ventilation, irrigation, and screen system
  • The condition of your insect netting
  • The working order of your greenhouse machinery

We are experts when it comes to commercial greenhouse maintenance and will be able to help you maintain any type of greenhouse to ensure your plant stock continues to thrive year after year. It doesn’t matter whether we’ve built your structure or not, we’re happy to carry out greenhouse maintenance anywhere in the UK.

The GVZ Glasshouse Maintenance Promise

Whether we’re cleaning and replacing the glass on the roof of your glasshouse or carrying out maintenance on your machinery, we always do a thorough, safe, and efficient job. Our general greenhouse maintenance checklist is fully comprehensive to make sure everything is covered when we visit, with futureproofing in mind.

Glasshouse Gutter Maintenance

We check the condition of your glasshouse gutters, clean the gutters and remove any debris. When not maintained or repaired, any cracks or damage to your gutters can have a negative impact on your greenhouse drainage system.

Water leakages can occur which can cause damage to your glasshouse structure and impact your crop yield. Moss growth in your gutters can lead to reduced light penetration. Maintaining and repairing your greenhouse gutters regularly will extend the lifespan of your gutters, your drainage system, your overall greenhouse structure, and prevent early and costly gutter replacements.

Glasshouse Roof, Gable, and Side Maintenance

We check for any damaged and broken glass in your glasshouse roof, gables, and side walls and carry out the necessary repairs. We’ll also check the cleanliness of all sheets of glass in your glasshouse structure.

Clean glass will maximise the light transmission inside your glasshouse, ensuring your plant stock receives enough sunlight to photosynthesise and grow. Direct sunlight is also a disinfectant, killing unwanted bacteria and pests naturally without the use of hard chemicals.

Fixing and replacing broken glass is vital to the optimal growth of your crops in your plant nursery. Any gaps in the glass or your glasshouse structure can allow unwanted insects to sneak in and affect your crop yield.

Cracks in your glass will also allow heat to escape and cold air and rain to come into your greenhouse, upsetting your so carefully curated greenhouse climate. By regularly maintaining and cleaning the glass, you’ll keep control over your growing climate for a successful yield and save on energy costs.

Greenhouse Ventilation System Maintenance

Regularly maintaining your ventilation system is a vital ritual in your greenhouse climate control. We thoroughly inspect all the mechanisms of your ventilation system and make sure everything is in a good working order. Whether you have a manual or automatic system, we carefully inspect all vents for wear and tear, and make sure they open and close as they should.

Maintenance of your racks and pinions is essential to the workings of your ventilation system. To make sure they operate smoothly, we’ll grease them, check their condition, and arrange replacements if required.

Amongst many other ventilation and screen parts, we stock a vast array of racks and pinions in different sizes, so it’s highly likely we’ll stock the replacements you need. With a well-maintained greenhouse ventilation system your greenhouse climate remains under your control, and you can carry on producing long into the future.

Glasshouse Screen Cloth and Screen System Maintenance

Thermal and shading screens are key to achieving the perfect growing climate and saving on energy in your commercial greenhouse. With the possibility of saving more than 60% on your energy costs, it’s in every grower’s best interest to regularly maintain their screen systems to ensure optimal functionality.

With every screen maintenance job, we will check your screen system works as it should and carry out a thorough inspection of your greenhouse screen cloth. Small tears and holes in your screen cloth can easily happen over time, but we can patch these up using cloth repair tape.

If larger chunks of your screen cloth are ripped or worn, we’ll remove those bits of cloth and expertly sow new cloth onto your existing screen so you can keep growing without requiring a full replacement.

If you or we do find the condition of your screen cloth is unsalvageable and you need a replacement, we can acquire and supply you with brand new screen cloth via our trusted Dutch screen cloth supplier.

Greenhouse Irrigation System Maintenance

We do a full inspection of your greenhouse irrigation system to make sure your crops’ main source of nutrient-rich water will not be interrupted.

We check for any leaks in the system, cracks in pipes and hoses, clean and inspect the filter for blockages, and make sure your irrigation parts like drip heads, nozzles, and valves are intact and working correctly.

We also check your irrigation system’s watering patterns for inconsistencies to ensure all your plants are watered evenly and are given the correct amount of hydration.

We stock thousands of glasshouse fixings and parts, so we’ll be able to replace any broken irrigation parts.

Greenhouse Heating System Maintenance

Especially in colder climates like the UK, your glasshouse heating system is key to achieving the right growing climate for your plant stock. Regular maintenance of your heating system will extend the lifespan of the system and allow you to keep the temperature inside your greenhouse under control. We will check for leaks and fix these to prevent corrosion to your pipes, inspect your fuel supply, and check your thermostats and thermometers are working accurately and in the correct location for precise readings.

If your commercial glasshouse has gas or oil-fired boilers, we inspect your pipes, your energy supply, and make sure your fuel lines and water supply for any heating pipes are in good working condition. In addition to the standard maintenance of your heating system, our OFTEC qualified technicians can also fully service your heaters.  In conjunction with regular maintenance and servicing of your greenhouse heating system comes the maintenance of your screen system, ventilation system, and your glass to prevent heat escaping through any gaps.

Greenhouse Drainage System Maintenance

We monitor your commercial greenhouse drainage system for performance and condition, thoroughly inspect your downspout and drainage pipes for blockages.

Preventatively, we’ll clean your gutters if necessary, removing any dirt, leaves, or other debris that can clog your drainage system. Maintenance of your water storage system such as water butts and water storage tanks and silos also needs to be carried out to make sure everything enabling your greenhouse water runoff is working and managed effectively.

Greenhouse drainage and water system maintenance is vital to controlling levels of humidity and reducing the risk of bacteria, pests, and fungi – which can be caused by pooling water – in your growing environment.

Glasshouse Structure and Glasshouse Fixings and Parts Maintenance

We carry out an in-depth inspection of your overall glasshouse structure and glasshouse fixings, bracings, and parts to make sure your structure is secure and sound.

We will carry out any necessary repairs and cleaning, and check for rust, wear, and tear. Because we stock and sell thousands of glasshouse parts and fixings, changing any parts in your commercial greenhouse that need replacing is never a problem.

We also stock lots of different size sheets of roof, gable, and side wall glass, and have access to thousands more parts via our trusted suppliers.

Greenhouse Door System Maintenance

Just like every other system in your nursery or garden centre, your greenhouse door system equally requires regular maintenance. Whether you operate a manual or automatic door system, sliding or overhead, glass or aluminium, we carry out a full inspection of your door mechanisms to make sure everything runs smoothly.

We lubricate your door tracks and make sure they’re clean and free from debris, so your doors slide open and shut without blockages. We inspect and tighten nuts and bolts where necessary, inspect hinges, latches, check there are no gaps or loose seals so everything closes tightly.

Depending on your commercial glasshouse plant stock, you want to be in control of your glasshouse heating and ventilation; your door systems play a major role in making sure your greenhouse climate stays under control.
